"Kids on the Beach" Painting

Modeled after the Mary Cassatt painting, "Children Playing on the Beach"

Materials Needed:

12"x 18" white or manilla construction paper; Picture of Mary Cassatt's painting, "Children Playing on the Beach"; pencils; watercolor; paintbrush; black marker

 

# of 50-minute Class Sessions Required:  2

 

Concepts and Vocabulary:

Impressionism; Discussion of a short history of Mary Cassatt's life and era; Compare and contrast what items were in that picture and what items would be in a similar picture today.  Space; Line; Perspective; Detail

 

Day 1:

After a short discussion to compare and contrast eras, children will use pencils and draw a picture of what kids today would look like on the beach with things they would bring to a beach trip.
 
Day 2:
Students will use watercolor and paint their picture.
 
Day 3:
Students will use black marker to add details to their paintings.
