Autobiographical Collage

Materials Needed:

Construction Paper; Ruler; Crayons; Magazines; Scissors; Glue; Tempera Cakes; Markers

 

# of 50-minute Class Sessions Required:  3

 

Concepts and Vocabulary:

Primary & Secondary colors; Analogous Colors; Value; Detail; Variety; Contrast; Collage; Autobiography

 

Day 1:

Write your name in large block or bubble letters.
Put a dot inside one of the letters and use a ruler to draw 6 lines through the letters and extending to the edges of the paper dividing the picture into 6 sections.  Trace the lines with a black marker, then draw a frame around your name at least 2" from your name.
Use crayons and choose at least 5 different values of your favorite color.  Color your name with the different values of crayons, changing to a different value each time you come to a different section of your name as divided by the lines.
 
Day 2:
Using a color wheel as the example, demonstrate how to mix the secondary colors.
Use tempera cakes and paint every other large section in the primary colors.  Paint the sections in between in secondary colors by mixing the appropriate primary colors.
 
Day 3:
Students will draw and/or cut out of magazines pictures that tell about themselves.  Pictures will be glued on the picture taking care that the placement of the pictures are on contrasting colors so that the pictures will stand out.
