Unit 03 - Energy

Unit 3 is an overview of .  The table that follows includes a summary of each day's lesson, with links to presentations, notes and handout used for each day.  Lessons and handouts for future dates are subject to change.  In general, links for notes and PowerPoint presentations will not be activated until the end of that school day.  (Be sure to refresh the page to get the latest links and updates.)  Unless otherwise noted, regular and PreAP will have the same assignments.

You must have a broadband Internet connection and at least Adobe Reader 6.0, and preferably Adobe Reader 8.0, to view PowerPoint presentations.  If you get an error message, count to 10 (to allow the browser to completely transfer the file), click the OK button on the error message, and then press the refresh button (or view - refresh in the menu).  Note that PowerPoint files cannot be printed, and copy-paste operations have been disabled.

10-26-09 Learning Goal:  Understand the concepts of energy and work, and that energy is never destroyed-it only changes forms.  Assignment--Regular Classes Only:  Complete the energy forms in the sample Energy Conversion Essay. Discuss all of the energy conversions that occur in an automobile.  Return graded Energy Forms and Conversions Quiz, and discuss the answers to the quiz.   Assignment--PreAP Classes Only:  Discuss Rube Goldberg Project Rules and Rubric.  Watch two video examples of Rube Goldberg devices.  For remainder of class, work on planning for project.  Take Rube Goldberg Project Parent Letter home to parents for review and signature.
10-27-09 Learning Goal:  Understand the concepts of energy and work, and that energy is never destroyed-it only changes forms. Assignment--Regular Classes Only:  Complete pp. 65-74 in workbook, from reading in textbook pp.  Assignment--PreAP Classes Only:  Complete the energy forms in the sample Energy Conversion Essay. Discuss all of the energy conversions that occur in an automobile.  Return graded Energy Forms and Conversions Quiz, and discuss the answers to the quiz.  For the last 20 minutes of class, work on Rube Goldberg Project planning.
10-28-09 Learning Goal:  Understand the concepts of energy and work, and that energy is never destroyed-it only changes forms.  Assignment: Potential and Kinetic Energy Lab, writing three short claim-evidence-reasoning paragraphs to describe the three demonstrations, for summative grade.  Homework: Complete report for Potential and Kinetic Energy lab, due at beginning of class on 10-29-08.
10-29-09 Learning Goal: Understand photosynthesis and stimulus-response forces in plants.  Assignment: Copy photosynthesis definition notes from board.  Watch two short video clips about photosynthesis and cellular respiration.
10-30-09 Learning Goal: Understand photosynthesis and stimulus-response forces in plants.  Assignment: Read pp. 204-209 and p.131 in science textbook, and answer Photosynthesis Guiding Questions.  At end of class, discuss answers to guiding questions.  Notes:  Photosynthesis and Phototropism-Gravitropism NotesHomework:  Study for photosynthesis quiz (closed notes, 15 m.c. questions).
11-02-09 Learning Goal: Understand photosynthesis and stimulus-response forces in plants.  Assignment: Review of photosynthesis, phototropism and gravitropism, in preparation for quiz.  Take photosynthesis quiz (15 m.c. questions plus 10 point short answer bonus).  Begin discussion of energy resources.  Homework:  Begin studying for test on Energy, to be given on Friday, 11-06-09.
11-03-09 Assignment: Counselor meeting.  No science classes.  Homework:  Study for summative grade test on energy, to be given on Friday, 11-06-09.
11-04-09 Learning Goal: Understand the sources of energy that we use today to power society, and the future sources of energy. Assignment:  Class discussion of energy resources, using Energy Resources PowerPoint, and Energy Resources Tree Map Handout.  Begin working on Energy Test Review.   Homework:  Continue work on Energy Test Review, which should be completed about halfway through class tomorrow.  Study for test on Energy, to be given on Friday, 11-06-09.
11-05-09 Learning Goal:  Understand energy forms and conversions (including potential and kinetic energy), photosynthesis. gravitropism, phototropism and energy resources.  Assignment:  Complete Energy Test Review in first 30 minutes of class, for formative grade.  During last 15 minutes of class, review Energy Test Review Answers Homework:  Study for summative grade test on Energy (34 m.c. questions plus 2 essay questions), to be given on Friday, 11-06-09.
11-06-09 Learning Goal: Understand energy forms and conversions (including potential and kinetic energy), photosynthesis. gravitropism, phototropism and energy resources.  Assignment: Short 5 minute review of material covered on test.  Take summative grade Energy Test (34 m.c. questions plus 2 essay questions).
