Celebrating Texas
Chapters 16-21
Students will explore Texas history from the period following
Reconstruction through the turn of the 20th century. Students will
analyze the defeat of the Plains Indians and the development of the
cattle industry in Texas - including the importance of the cattle trails
and large ranches to Texas' economy. The development of the farming, oil
and railroad industries will also be examined. The oil and railroad
industries will be studied as they developed through the 1920s and 1930s
in this unit. Students will also be given the opportunity to evaluate
the various social and political reform movements of this period. (Community of Learners, CFB-ISD)

Procedures:
- Read and discuss Linking History page 369 of
Celebrating Texas.
- Play The Old Chisholm Trail.
- Allow students time to read the lyrics.
- Assign students to work in partners or small groups to
respond to the lyric analysis sheet.
- EXTENSION: Encourage students to write their own ballad
about another of the famous Texas cattle trails.
