 Celebrating Texas Chapter 4
This unit focuses on the Native American cultures in Texas prior to European colonization. Students will analyze the early history, culture and environmental interactions of native peoples. Students will compare and contrast the tribal characteristics such as location, housing, clothing, tools, political, economic and social development. (Community of Learners, CFB-ISD)

(7.2). History. The student understands how individuals, events, and issues prior to the Texas Revolution shaped the history of Texas
(A.) compare the cultures of Native Americans in Texas prior to European colonization
(7.10). Geography. The student understands the effects of the interaction between humans and the environment in Texas during the 19th and 20th centuries.
(A.) identify ways in which Texans have adapted to and modified the environment and analyze the consequences of the modifications; and
Language Arts
(7.10.) Reading/comprehension. The student uses a variety of strategies to comprehend a wide range of texts of increasing levels of difficulty.
(D). describe mental images that text descriptions evoke (4-8);
(H). draw inferences such as conclusions or generalizations and support them with text evidence and experience (4-8);
(7.15). Writing/purposes. The student writes for a variety of audiences and purposes and in a variety of forms.
(A.) write to express, discover, record, develop, reflect on ideas, and to problem solve (4-8);  

Materials:

  • Man Walks Among Us song and lyrics (See Brian Burns web page for lyrics.)

Procedures:

  1. Discuss the migration of Native Americans to Texas.
  2. Listen to Man Walks Among Us.
  3. Pass out lyrics and have students read and respond to the Lyric Analysis sheet.
  4. From the point of view of a Native Texan write a poem or song lyrics warning fellow tribe members of changes the coming European settlers are bringing.
