TAKS

TAKS = Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills

There are three (3) TAKS tests taken by all third graders in Texas:
* Reading (taken in March)
Mathematics (taken in April)

* State standards require that students pass TAKS Reading and Math to be promoted. Students will be given additional opportunities to pass if needed. Summer school may also be required.

There are three (3) TAKS tests taken by all fourth graders in Texas:
            Writing - Composition and Objective portions (taken in March)
            Reading (taken in April)
            Mathematics (taken in April)

Students must pass all three examinations to be considered for promotion to fifth grade. Those who are unsuccessful will be required by the district to successfully complete summer school to be considered for promotion or placement.

Strategies Landry Elementary Uses to Insure Student Success:

Teaching to the "TEKS" (Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills)
Teaching strategies to successfully navigate through each test
Providing tutoring after school and weekends for struggling students
In-school tutoring by teachers and administrators
Weekly assessments to monitor progress - beginning second semester
Communication to parents through grading, conferences, parent meetings, and more
Continual and constant monitoring of each student
Motivation to succeed and celebration of success!

What you can do to prepare your child for TAKS:

Read to and read with your child each and every day!
Attend parent meetings regarding TAKS.
Ask your child questions and expect answers in complete sentences.
Have your child describe things in detail.
(ex: "What did you do at school today?", "What was your favorite/worst part of the day?", "What was the easiest/hardest thing you learned today?')
Talk to your child - have conversations!
Keep open lines of communication with your child's teacher.
Review assessments your child brings home (beginning second semester) to monitor his/her progress.
Do not put any undue pressure & stress on your child in regards to TAKS.
Celebrate successes with your child.
Allow for plenty of uninterrupted sleep the nights prior to testing.
Provide your child a good breakfast (full of protein, not sugar) on days of testing.
Give your child hugs and high fives for all of their hard work!
