The Course
Art One is an introductory, survey course designed to familiarize students with many different processes of art as well as the history and vocabulary involved in critiquing works of art. Students will learn about processes such as drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, and will also learn how to use many different media in creating their own original works of art, which will prepare them for advanced courses in each of the processes mentioned above. By the end of this course, students will be able to converse about art and will have a full appreciation of what art is. Students will also be able to identify specific works of art and will learn about artists, time periods, movements, and styles in the history of art.
Requirements
Students will be required to use many different artistic media, from charcoal to watercolor, clay to printing ink, but will also be required to read, write, create original projects, and conduct oral presentations. Students will be required to keep up with assignments, make up any missed work in a timely fashion, and turn in all assignments and projects on time. The following materials will also be required for this class:
| A 3-ring binder to keep up with all in-class readings, notes, and written assignments. | |
| Dividers for binder. | |
|
Sketchbook and supplies* |
*There is a $25 supply fee required for this course. Students will receive all necessary supplies in their supply packets.
Grading Policy
Formative Grades will comprise 40% of the students’ overall nine-week average and include the following:
| Sketchbook assignments | |
| Any daily or homework assignment such as vocabulary exercises, preliminary sketches, observational drawings etc. |
Summative Grades will make up the other 60% of the students’ average and include the following:
| Major projects (including portfolios) | |
| Tests | |
| Quizzes |
Late Work and Absences: There will be a one-day grace period for all major projects, after which time, a 10 point deduction, per day, will be made for each day late. Other formative assignments will not be accepted after one week beyond due date. If a student is absent on the day of a quiz or a test, he or she must make up the quiz or test during tutorials upon his/her return to school if other arrangements have not been made.
*I encourage all students to talk to me about any special arrangements or extenuating circumstances that need to be dealt with on an individual basis.
Extended Education
I will be available for tutorials on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday afternoons from 2:45-3:30 unless other arrangements are necessary. I encourage students to talk to me if they are having trouble, need extended time, or additional instruction, and strongly urge them to attend a tutorial session.
Extra Credit
| Extra credit will be given to students who attend museum exhibits or gallery shows—students must provide proof of attendance and turn in a one-paragraph explanation of the event. | |
| Extra credit will also be given to students who participate in shows and competitions throughout the year (I will provide a schedule as events approach). | |
| Other extra credit opportunities will arise as the year progresses. |
