Word Wall Bingo

Each child has a bingo card with six blank spaces. The children write one Word Wall word of their choice in each space. Write all Word Wall words on index cards.  The child draws a card, reads it, and then covers it if it is on his/her card.  When all words on the bingo card are covered say BINGO!

Word Battle

Use one set of flashcards, turned face down. Turn one card over. The first person to say the word gets the card. The person with the most cards at the end wins.

Beat the Timer

Students are gathered in the meeting area. The teacher sets the timer. The teacher flashes the Word Wall word cards. Children try to read all of the cards before the timer goes off. Once students consistently read all of the word cards within the time given, tell them you are going to give them less time. So, they will have to be even faster!

Tic-Tac-Toe

Divide the class into two teams of X's and O's. Write Word Wall words in the tic-tac-toe spaces. Team members take turns coming up and selecting a space to read. If the child reads the word correctly, he or she may put up an X or O for his or her team. If the answer is incorrect, the other team gets to send a player to the board to try to read the same word.

Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check

The children take a paper with 4 columns (they can fold a page in half and then in half again). The teacher will give them 5 words from the Word Wall which the children will write in the first column.   The students will SAY each word and notice the parts of the word as they hear it. Next they will LOOK at the word to notice what it looks like on the paper. After that they will COVER the word and think about how the word looks. After that they will WRITE the word from memory. Next they will uncover the word and CHECK it with the word written in the first column. Finally they will COVER the word and WRITE it again. This brain-friendly activity is great for getting these words into long-term memory.

Erasing Relay

Write two columns of Word Wall words on the board that are approximately equal in difficulty. Include as many words on the board as there are children in the relay. Children are divided into 2 teams, and will stand in two lines at right angles to the chalkboard. At the signal, the first child in each line points at the first word in his respective column of words and reads that word. If he or she reads the word correctly, he or she is allowed to erase that word. The game is won by the side that erases all the words first.

Slap

Students play with a partner. Partner A names a word from the Word Wall. He then lays the cards face up one at a time.  Partner B reads the words silently and slaps the table when he sees the word that Partner A had named. The object of the game is to slap the table before the next card is laid down. The roles are then switched.

Jump On It!

Copy Word Wall words on index cards (one word per card). Make a second set of the same words. Scatter one set faceup on the floor, leaving about a foot between each card. Place the other set in a stack facedown. Turn over the first card in the stack. Have your child read the word (offer help as needed) and then jump on the corresponding card on the floor. Turn over the next card and have your child read it and jump to that word. Continue until your child has jumped on all of the words. Mix up the cards and play again!

Rainbow Words

Turn Word Wall words into rainbows!  Ask your child to write a Word Wall word on paper in big letters. Using different-colored crayons, your child can then trace around the word again and again, reading the word each time.

Funny Voices

As you go through the stack of cards, ask the children to read in the following voices:

baby     robot     goofy         scary         mad             old

BANG!

All the Word Wall words we have learned are put on index cards. Make 2 to 3 “BANG!” cards to add to the stack.  Stack all cards face down.  The children sit in a circle and each take a word from the stack. If they can read the word, they get to keep it. If they cannot, the word is returned to the bottom of the stack. If they pull a card with the word BANG! from the stack, all the cards they have collected so far must be returned to the bottom of the stack. The child with the most cards when the game ends is the winner.

Guess The Word

Cover all but the first letter in the word.  Children try to guess the word.  If they cannot guess the word, reveal another letter.  Continue until the word is guessed.

Wheel of Fortune

Create sentences using Word Wall words.  Children look at Word Wall words and guess letters to complete the sentence.

EX:  -/---/---/---.  (I can see you.)

Hearing Sounds

Say a word form the Word Wall.  Ask your child “where do you hear the ___ sound?”  Child records the answer.
