Newman Smith senior Kenneth Long earned a perfect score (36) on the June 2007 ACT examination. Long was one of 17 students out of 18,500 test takers in the state of Texas to earn a perfect score.
2007, SAT Mean Score: Critical Reading 511, above state and national norm; Mathematics 538, above state and national norm; Writing 513, above state and national norm.
In 2006, 58 students in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch School District earned a score of 200 or higher on the PSAT examination. Twenty-four of the 58 students were Newman Smith High School students.

The 22 students identified as National Merit Semifinalists and National Merit Commended Students earned PSAT scores in excess of 200. The cutoff for the 2008 competition was 200 for National Merit Commended and 217 for National Merit Semifinalists on a scale of 240. The range of scores for the 22-students were 202 to 232.
