ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Newman Smith’s Career and College Center
Located in our counseling suite, this center houses information about specific colleges and universities in Texas as well as in other parts of the United States.  Information about admission requirements, financial aid, housing, and sometimes application forms will be located in the Center.  Additionally, we have career information and resources about a wide range of options.  Four computers with on-line access are available for students’ use for career and college search as well as for on-line registration for college admission tests.

Career Placement Center
Located at 1805 Walnut Avenue in Carrollton, this district resource can assist students with job placement, both part and full-time.  Additionally, the center has available additional college and career resources, including a resume writer, that our local counseling office does not have.  Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The Center is open during the summer as well.  Please call 972-968-6562 for additional information or visit the Career Placement Center website at http://www.cfbisd.edu/cpc/

Bridges

Bridges is an internet site that can be accessed in our office and from your home to assist students—provides  career exploration, job skills and employment trends.  http://www.bridges.com Click on American, then choose Student.

Welcome to Newman Smith!  The counseling staff is eager to meet you and your son or daughter.  We look forward to developing a collaborative relationship with your family as we work with you and your child to set educational goals and make plans for the next four years and beyond.

Our counseling suite houses five counselors, a registrar, two counseling secretaries, a student assistance counselor, and the Records Office.  So that you may use our services more effectively, we’d like to tell you who we are and what we can do to help you and your child.

The Counseling Office is located on the left side of the hallway that opens from the main entrance to Newman Smith.

The Counseling Staff is available to provide problem-focused counseling, academic guidance and direction, and assistance with contacting/conferencing with our teaching staff.  Due to the large numbers of students assigned to each counselor, long-term counseling with any one student is usually not possible.  Much of our focus in the counseling office will be to assist students with decision-making in regard to their academic concerns and needs.  We are happy to assist you and your child in resolving any problem that may be interfering with his/her ability to succeed at Newman Smith.  If more than short-term counseling is required, then we will refer you to resources within our community for further assistance.  We are available for crisis counseling (suicide, substance abuse, child abuse, etc.) and will make referrals for long-term intervention and problem-solving.  Referrals may be made to our student assistance counselor, Shannon Johnson, or to the Family Center which provides counseling services in our district.

The registrar and counselors are responsible for coordinating school-wide testing programs such as TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills); PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test); and AP (Advanced Placement) examinations.  We can also assist students with registering for the SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test), the ACT (American College Test), and the THEA as well as aptitude and interest inventories that may be helpful in career planning.  We are also available to support parents and/or students through appropriate referrals for special education testing.
