Newman Smith High School Senior Information

Completion of the Texas Common Application
1. You may apply on-line at www.applytexas.org or you may use a paper application (available in the counseling office) to apply to Texas public colleges/universities of your choice. Do either a paper application or an on-line application-do not do both.

2. Please read the directions for completion of this application (on pages iv and v) before you begin. If you plan to submit a paper application, you might even want to make a copy of the blank application and work on that first so that your final copy will look "polished".

3. If you decide to apply on-line, do not do your essays on-line. It is suggested that you complete your essays just as you would any essay required for an English class and have them proofed and corrected before you submit them. If a college requires completion of essays, those essays will be a factor in determining your admission. Use this opportunity to stand out from the crowd!

4. Remember to use your full legal name on all sections of the application.

5. Memorize your social security number and put it on all documents that you will be sending to the colleges to which you apply. If you are paying your application fees by check, be sure to put your social security number on your check.

6. If completing a paper application, be sure to print in black ink or type your application. Be as neat as possible.

7. Be sure to order a transcript for each college to which you apply. These may be ordered at docufide.com. Transcripts can be given to you for enclosure with your application or may be mailed directly by the Records Office to the receiving school.

8. If you will be using the common application to apply to more than one university, be sure to read the directions on page 6 of the common application and follow those carefully. Keep the original so you can make additional copies should you need to do so.

9. Be sure to check the inside front cover for the application fee for each school and send the correct amount. Failure to include your application fee or an incorrect fee amount can delay processing of your application. The inside back cover of the common application lists deadline dates for application, financial aid, and scholarship for each college. In addition, the college codes required for the FAFSA are included on this same chart.

10. County codes for our students are: Dallas 057 and Denton 06l The high school code for Newman Smith is 441-143. You will also need a code number for your proposed major. These code numbers may be found in the code book, available in our office or from your English teacher.
