Science/Engineering Pathway at Newman Smith

2004-2005 Overview

The Science/Engineering Pathway at Newman Smith High School introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering and engineering technology prior to entering college. The goal of the pathway is to attract more students to engineering and allow them to determine if engineering is the career they desire. This goal is accomplished by combining challenging curriculum, high student expectations, and involvement of business and post-secondary education leaders.

Curriculum is a four-year, flexible sequence of courses including college preparatory mathematics and science courses. Students must have completed Algebra or higher in the 8 th grade. It is curriculum-driven in that the students in the program are not grouped together for specific classes.

. Recommended Science: PreAP Biology, Chemistry and Physics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP
Physics, and Computer Science I.
. Recommended Math: PreAP Geometry, PreAP Algebra II, PreAP Pre-Calculus, Calculus AB,
Calculus BC, College Algebra or AP Statistics.
. Suggested Electives: Engineering Graphics, Architectural Graphics, AP Computer Science A, AP
Computer Science AB and/or Technology Internship Program (TIP).
. Suggested Summer School: Government, Economics, Speech, Health and PE.

Expectations of students: Students following this course of study are expected to:

. Understand technology as a tool for problem solving and how it applies to the economy, lifestyles and career choices and the scientific processes, engineering problem solving and the applications of technology.
. Be prepared for the rigorous college curriculum that is part of an engineering program.
. Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of mathematics and their applications to problem solving and the skills necessary to work in teams effectively.
. Effectively communicate information and solutions in a variety of contexts, including the preparation and presentation of information in different settings.

Business and Post-Secondary Education: The involvement of representatives from these areas help students to achieve higher academic success while also addressing the nation's need for a technology workforce. Students are provided opportunities to speakers, engineering career events, engineering-related competitions, national programs such as the Infinity Project, professional organizations, and scholarships, etc.

The Science/Engineering Pathway Advisory Board includes representation from the following:

. Companies and Industry: Baker Petrolite, BJ Services Company, Burns & McDonnell Engineering Company, Centex Homes DFW Regional, City of Frisco , Cohesive Automation, F&S Partners Incorporated, Halliburton, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, STMicroelectronics, Inc., TD Industries and Texas LAB Consultants
. Professional Organizations : American Institute of Architects, American Institute of Constructors, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Society of Petroleum Engineers, and Society of Women Engineers
. Fields of Science and Engineering : Civil, Computer Science, Construction, Construction Technology, Electrical, Environmental, Food Production, Mechanical, Mechanical & Electrical Construction, Petroleum, and Technology Management
. Higher Education: Brookhaven College ; Brookhaven College - Ellison Miles Geotechnology Institute; SMU, University of North Texas , UT Arlington , and UTD
