Characteristics of Fantasy


Often centered around quests (a search or mission)
Deal with growth of the hero (becomes a better person)
Full of magic and events that could never really happen
Deal with big, important, and sometimes dangerous events
The possible outcomes are endless
Great responsibility is carried by the hero
Hero must prove worthy of the quest 
Good eventually wins
Small or weak characters become strong or important

Where to Find Fantasies


 
Fiction Section (Look for FIC sign hanging from ceiling)
Paperback Section (dark bookshelves)


How Do I Know It's a Fantasy?


 
Look on the inside cover of the book jacket, or on the back of the book.
Look for words like "magic," "imaginary," enchantment," etc.
Avoid realistic or historical situations.
