Welcome
to Modified Science 1 at
Supplies: It would be helpful if each student has the following
supplies:
ü 1 inch 3-ring binder with
dividers
ü several different colored
highlighters
ü loose-leaf notebook paper
ü pencils with an eraser
ü red pen for grading papers
ü a box of tissues brought
into the class to share sometime during the year
Grading: Formative 40% (This
includes daily work, homework, and test reviews).
Summative 60% (This includes unit tests, and math projects).
Progress
Reports/Report Cards: Every student will receive a 3-week progress report and a 9-week
report card. Please call the school or check with your student to find out
progress/report card dates.
Failing Grades: If a
student is failing at progress report time, I will use a phone call or email to
notify his or her parent/guardian. Be aware
that failing grades can prevent a student from participating in sports and
other UIL activities.
Daily
Work and Homework: All work is expected to be
neat, organized, and legible. Newman
Smith will be emphasizing writing in all classes this year.
Each
student will be given a 2-pocket folder with brads.
Each
day, the student is to copy the daily “To Do” assignment onto the provided
spiral notebook. The student will
complete the work assigned. When
worksheets are given out and completed during class, the student will place the
completed work in the back pocket of the folder.
This
folder will always stay in class. I will
place the graded, recorded work behind the calendar in the front of the
folder. As the semester progresses, the
student should move the completed work to a 3-ring binder, so the work remains
well organized and accessible for the student to review and study.
Notes: Students are required to take notes in
class. Students are expected to
concentrate on their schoolwork and put force their best effort.
Tutorials: Students who are having difficulty with a
topic should attend tutorials as soon as possible. I’m available most days immediately after
school. A tutorial bus leaves
Absences: It is the student’s responsibility to make up
any work missed due to an absence. The work assigned prior to the absence is
due on the first day back in class. The missed assignment and current
assignment are due the next class day. Since quizzes and tests are announced
well in advance, students who miss the class day before the quiz or test are
expected to take the quiz or test at the regular time. If a student is absent
on a quiz or test day, they should arrange a make-up as soon as possible.
Students who have planned absences or school activities that take them out of
class must turn in assignments and take any quizzes or tests prior to
the absence.
Cheating: Cheating is not tolerated at NSHS. Taking another student’s
work and claiming it as your own, with or without the student's permission is
considered cheating. Group work does not mean copying your partner’s paper.
Talking and roaming eyes during quizzes or tests is considered cheating and
will result in zeros for all parties involved. If you are caught cheating, you
will be given a zero with no chance to redo the assignment. NSHS students are
expected to be honest and behave in an ethical manner.
Retests: Students will be permitted to retest but must
do so within one week of receiving the original test grade. Students who scored less than a 70 on the
original test can receive at most a 70 on the retests. Students who earned higher than a 70 may average
the original test grade and the retest grade.
Tardies: All students
must be in their assigned seats when the bell rings. If a student does not get
to class on time, he or she is required to sign the tardy log. Remember that 3 tardies count as 1 absence.
Food
and Drinks:
Only bottled water is allowed in classrooms at NSHS. No other drinks or any
food is allowed in my classroom.
I
am looking forward to working with your student. If you wish to contact me at the school be
aware that my conference time is 7th period:
Sincerely,
Student
