Commercial Arts

OBJECTIVES:
1. Arrange in order the steps in the design process.
2. Complete statements concerning the elements of design.
3. Identify examples of the principles of design.
4. Arrange in order the basics for making a sketch.
5. Complete given assignments with at least 70% accuracy.

STEPS IN THE DESIGN PROCESS

If you compare these steps to the Scientific Method, you will see some similarities...

1. State the objective (problem) - decide what is to be designed or transmitted and state the problem as clearly and specifically as possible. (NOTE: Answer the who, what, where, when, and how questions at this time.)
2. Gather information - Research the problem by reading, discussing, and thinking about it.
3. Find solutions - Think of all the bits of information you have gathered and decide on different ways of solving the problem.
4. Evaluate solutions - Examine the possible solutions, then decide on the best possible solution. (NOTE: Decide if it is a cost effective solution)
5. Refine ideas and present the best solution.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
Space: the area allowed to work with - examples: piece of paper, billboard, package label, a small box area on an ISP's home page
Line: moves the reader's eye from one point to another; may be straight, curved, angled, heavy, or light
Form: gives the element shape; may be a square, rectangle, circle, triangle, or irregular shape
Color: attracts the eye and provides contrast as well as sets the mood of a design. (NOTE: red, yellow, and orange are warm colors. Blue, green, and purple are cool colors. Dark colors make objects appear smaller. Light colors make objects appear lighter.)

PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
Balance: distribution of weight on each side of a center point
Formal Balance: symmetrical, achieved by identical or even placement on each side of the center point
Informal Balance: asymmetrical, achieved by equalizing the weight of different elements in a design.
Proportion: relationship between the sizes of the elements of the design

Rhythm: directs and controls the motion of the reader's eye
Contrast: used to create interest and attract attention by using differences in size, color, or appearance.
Unity: a combination of different elements to promote an undivided total effect.

BASIC STEPS FOR MAKING A SKETCH
1. Draw light guidelines to show the shape of the object.
2. Lightly draw in the outline of the object.
3. Lightly draw in the inside details.
4. Darken in the outline and inside details.
5. Erase any distracting lines.

COMMERCIAL ART
Sketch a Poster

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate ability to design and layout a poster which depicts the theme of Technology.

INSTRUCTIONS: Design a poster using the following specifications.

The poster must be on a hanging type of cardboard or posterboard.
The poster must deal with one or more areas of Technology.
The following information must be included in the design:
- the words "Technology Education"
- a theme or saying relating to technology education
- a picture or graphic(s) that represents the theme or saying
Any lettering may be done in only one style, but may be at most two different sizes (large and/or small letters)

CRITERIA:
How well does the design reflect, interpret, or communicate the theme of Technology?
Is there use of elements of design to moves the reader's eye, give the element shape, attract the eye, and provides contrast?
Is there use of the concepts of balance, proportion, contrast, rhythm, and unity, in the design of the poster?
