ESL Levels Newcomer, 1, 2, and 3

Newcomer's

Newcomer's are the very beginning of the ESL journey.  They are usually in the United States schools for the first time.  Our main concentration is in increasing English language vocabulary and pronunciation through a lot of listening and speaking activities.  They will learn how to read and write in English as well.

ESL 1

ESL Level 1 students are very busy perfecting their reading and writing skills in English.  They are also speaking and listening more than ever before.  Students will not yet be expected to take the TAKS test, but they are expected to master the appropriate TEKS.

ESL 2

ESL Level 2 is a place to refine and build the skills of English reading and writing that the student has previously learned in Level 1.  Through challenging reading experiences and by writing various types of compositions and poetry, the student will be prepared to take the TAKS test, often for the first time, during this school year.  This is the final year before the ESL student enters a regular Language Arts classroom.  We have much to learn!

ESL 3

ESL 3 students have been in school longer than other ESL students.  Therefore, expectations for these students are much higher than at other Levels.  ESL students will remain in ESL 3 until they pass the TAKS Reading and Writing tests, and are able to Exit the ESL program.  Because of this, most of what we do in ESL 3 classes is specifically geared to these students having the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the grade level TAKS tests.  Other requirements for Exiting the ESL Program beside passing TAKS tests are:  receiving an Advanced High rating on the TELPAS Writing section, receiving passing grades in their LA and ESL classes all year, and passing the WMLS-R Oral Proficiency test with a score of 4 or above.

 Second Nine Weeks Plans

Now that we all pretty much have our routines down, we are really getting down to the business of listening, speaking, reading, and writing English on a daily basis....even our Newcomers!  On most Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, we are writing stories in Writer's Workshop.  Usually students write on a subject of their own choosing, though at times I will assign a special prompt for them to write about.  On most Tuesdays and Thursdays, we do activities such as reading a novel, becoming familiar with English grammar and mechanics, practicing test-taking skills, and orally reading plays with classmates.  Currently, we are reading the novel, Any Small Goodness by Tony Johnston.

Many of my students have been assigned tutorials during the week either before school, after school, or both.  Parents, please be certain that your son or daughter are attending and participating in these important opportunities to gain knowledge and skills in areas where they may be less successful than others.  Not only will tutorials help a great deal to get these student ready to succeed on the TAKS Tests, but they will be learning and reviewing skills that will be important for their future in school and in their chosen careers.

Parents, thank you to those who came to Parent-Teacher Conferences in October.  We will be having another set of conferences in January or February.  I'll be looking forward to meeting many other parents at those.  :)
