5.4B - Estimation |
| The Texas Education Agency states: |
| Students are expected to round all numbers before performing any computations. In addition and Subtraction situations, numbers may be rounded to the highest place value of the smallest number used in the computation or to compatible numbers. Numbers in multiplication and division situations will be rounded to the highest place value of each number, or to compatible numbers. Single digit numbers are not rounded. Correct answer choices will reflect the strategy of rounding numbers before performing the arithmetic operation. Answer choices may be numbers or ranges of numbers (ex. Between 150 and 200). Measurement units or their abbreviations will be included with the numerical answers. |
| Lessons: |
| Day 1 |
|
Students will use estimation to solve
problems where exact answers are not required. Students will use
front-end estimation when all of the numbers go out to the same place value.
Students will estimate to solve problems when numbers go out to different
place values. Notes - Estimation with Addition and Subtraction |
| Day 2 |
| Students will practice estimating sums
and differences. CW - Estimating sums and differences Additional Activities Technology – Bring in a grocery ad or restaurant menu. Have students plan a meal and estimate the price. Good to use at Thanksgiving. Have students create a powerpoint that includes pictures of food and examples of rounding. Math Advantage – Lesson 1.2 – Benchmark numbers Math Advantage – Lesson 2.5 – Estimation and Column Addition Math Advantage – Lesson 4.4 – Estimating Sums and Differences |
| Day 3 |
|
Students will use estimation to solve
problems where exact answers are not required. Students will estimate to solve
problems involving multiplication. Notes - Estimation with Multiplication Additional Activities Math Advantage – Lesson 6.3 – Estimating Products |
| Day 4 |
|
Students will use estimation to solve
problems where exact answers are not required. Students will estimate to
solve problems involving division. Notes - Estimation with Division Additional Activities Math Advantage – Lesson 7.2 – Compatible numbers and division Math Advantage – Lesson 8.1 – Division patterns and zeros Math Advantage – Lesson 8.2 – Estimating quotients Play the estimation game found on http://www.col-ed.org/cur/math/math24.txt |
