5.3A - Addition and Subtraction

 
The Texas Education Agency states:
Extraneous information may be given in the problem.  The number of addends and the number of digits in the addends will be reasonable within the context of the problem.
 
Lessons:
Day 1
Students will add and subtract whole numbers and decimals.

Day 2
Students will solve problems using addition and subtraction.  Students will write solution sentences before solving the problem.  Students will list the fact families for their solution sentences.  Students will use parentheses to identify which problem to solve first in a multiple operation problem.

Use base ten blocks to show regrouping
Give the students a copy of a checkbook.  Start with a beginning balance and give them a list of amounts to withdraw and deposit.
Students can use grid paper to line up their decimals.
