First Week of School

 
Day 1 - Monday - August 27th
7:50-8:05 Choose a seat; Complete "A Time capsule About Me"; Create a cubby card
8:05-8:35  P.E.
8:35-10:00 Introduction of teachers, 5th grade, and students (show powerpoint for teacher's "All About Me" and "Fifth Grade Intro"); Students will play M&M introductionsFinish time capsule and cubby cards
10:00-10:30  Students will create a circle map identifying their goals for the upcoming year
10:30-10:55  Students will create a tree map describing the expected behaviors when students are out of the pod.
10:55-11:55 Lunch/Recess
11:55-12:45 Students will organize their supplies (show powerpoint "First Day") and turn them into the teacher
12:45-1:30 Teacher will discuss the consequences if students get their planner signed (Show "discipline" powerpoint).  Students will discuss the PYP Attitudes and Learner Profile.  Students will fill out their own progress report.  Students will create a bubble map using at least 3 character traits from the IB Learner Profile.  Underneath each trait, students will write a sentence explaining why they picked that trait. Remind students to bring a book from home.

Day 2 - Tuesday - August 28th
7:50-8:05 Students will complete a crossword puzzle based on M&M introductions. 
8:05-8:35  P.E.
8:35-9:00  Students will be given a rubric for Book Report #1 - Book Poster.  Students will go outside for a 5th grade scavenger hunt
9:00-10:15 - Pass out textbooks and cover them.
10:15-10:55  Students will discuss the attributes that describe a successful student.  Students will create a double bubble map comparing successful students and unsuccessful students.
10:55-11:55 - Lunch/Recess
11:55-12:45  Students will perform a skit to show the different aspects of the PYP Learner Profile.
12:45-1:30 - Math-Students will copy a place value chart on a piece of notebook paper and then on a piece of construction paper CW - Place Value Chart on construction paper - Due Friday
1:30-2:05 Students will complete analogies.  Students will will complete Word Ladders.

Day 3 - Wednesday - August 29th
7:50-8:05 Sustained Silent Reading
8:05-8:35  P.E.
8:35-9:45 Students will complete an anticipatory guide for "Geography of the United States".  Students will use play-dough to make a map of the US from memory.
9:45-10:15 Students will complete an anticipatory guide for "Science Lab Safety Rules".  Students will discuss Science Lab Safety rules and sign a Science Safety Contract.
10:15-10:55 - Students will begin writing in their journals.  Students will discuss what makes a good journal entry  (show powerpoint for "Good Journal Writing").  Students will create a circle map to brainstorm ideas for their 3 short entries. 3 short entries are due Friday.
10:55-11:55 Lunch/Recess
11:55-12:15 Silent reading / journal writing
12:15-12:45 Students will be given a blank piece of paper with a small drawing and will be asked to complete the drawing.
12:45-1:30  Students will create a bridge map demonstrating what it takes to make good grades.  Students will create a multiflow map describing the causes and effects of a successful student.
1:30-2:05 - Students will finish their place value charts
2:05-2:55  Specials
 
Day 4 - Thursday - August 30th
7:50-8:05 Sustained Silent Reading / Journal Writing
8:05-8:35  P.E.
8:35-9:45  Students will be given 45 minutes to complete a diagnostic math test given by the district. 
9:45-10:15 Science safety quiz
10:15-10:55 Social Studies - Students will label a map of the United States using pages A2-A3 and A10-A13.
10:55-11:55 Lunch/Recess
11:55-12:15  Sustained Silent Reading / Journal Writing
12:15-12:45  Students will create a flow map listing the steps we take to get ready for dismissal.
12:45-2:05  Teacher will conduct Reading Inventories.  Students may work on their book poster, writing journals, map of the US, place value chart, thinking maps (Collect one each day),  and any other work not finished.
2:05-2:55  Specials
 
Day 5 - Friday - August 31st
7:50-8:05 Sustained Silent Reading / Journal Writing
8:05-8:35  P.E.
8:35-9:15  Students will create a brace map listing the items they need to have for each class.  Students will create a brace map listing what is necessary to be a well-balanced person.
9:15-10:55  Teacher will conduct Reading Inventories.  Students may work on their book poster, writing journals, map of the US, place value chart, thinking maps,  and any other work not finished.
10:55-11:55 Lunch/Recess
11:45-12:15  Sustained Silent Reading / Journal Writing
12:15-12:45   Students will solve a Wittzle Pro card looking for solutions from 1-36.  Place Value Chart due today.
12:45-2:05  Teacher will conduct Reading Inventories.  Students may work on their book poster, writing journals, map of the US, place value chart, thinking maps,  and any other work not finished.
