Homework
Reading:
Each week students are required to read for 100 minutes. Reading logs will be due each Monday. I recommend reading Monday-Friday for 20 minutes each night.
Spelling: This year McKamy has started a new spelling program. Students will have a spelling journal that they are expected to complete their spelling homework in. Each week students are expected to do the following activities:
Monday: Sort the words into categories according to the patterns represented by the bold printed words on the list.
Tuesday: Buddy sort by laying down a word from each category as a header. Read the rest of the words aloud and have students indicate where the words goes without seeing it. Lay it down and have them correct if necessary.
Wednesday: Word hunt for words with the same sound, pattern or both while they are doing their 20 minutes of reading.
Thursday: Writing sort by calling out the words in random order and have your child write them in categories.
Math:
Students will have a worksheet to complete nightly Mon-Thur over the skills that were taught and practiced in class. CFB-ISD has specific strategies that are required to teach concepts. Please note that some of the strategies are different from the strategies that you may have been taught to use, so it may be confusing to you, however the students have a better understanding of the concept and can complete the assignments independently. They will have their math note spiral to use as a resource when new concepts are taught. We discuss the homework answers each day so that students have immediate feedback.
Science:
In order to help prepare for the 5th grade science Taks test we will be taking weekly science vocabulary test. Students will have 9 vocabulary words to study each week. I would recommend that they study 3 words per night and review all the words on the night before the test. Students can also make flashcards and play the matching game to help them study.
