Landforms

Day 1  Students will read and discuss pages 400-413 in their science textbooks.  Students will discuss plate movement and changes in the earth's crust.  Students will discuss the major differences in weathering and erosion.  Students will complete a worksheet titled "Earth's Changing Crust".  Students will write vocabulary words in science spirals.

CW - vocabulary and Earth's Changing Crust worksheet     HW - vocabulary and Earth's Changing Crust worksheet due Friday, September 29.

Day 2  Continue working on Earth's Changing Crust.

Day 3  Write lab report for Landforms Kit investigation 1.  Prepare materials for investigation 1.  Create a three-dimensional model of the school area.

CW-write lab report    HW-none

Day 4  Finish create 3-D models of school area, write vocabulary words in science spirals, and discuss the models with the class.

CW-finish models, vocabulary, and discussion questions    HW-unfinished class work

Day 5 Using their 3-D models, students create an overlay grid map of their school yard.  Read Science story: Maps and How They Are Made and Ancient Maps discuss.  Write vocabulary words in science spiral and discuss science stories.  Finish conclusion for the lab report

CW-overlay map grid and vocabulary         HW-Schoolyard Models Lab Report due Thursday October 5th.

Day 6 Students will view a poster of the Grand Canyon and discuss how the Grand Canyon was formed.  Students will watch a video about the famous landform and take notes about the video.

CW-discussion, science story, and video      HW-Notes on Grand Canyon video

Day 7  Students will begin writing the lab report for the Erosion Lab.  Students will create a river using a stream table.  They will observe the landforms that occur within their stream tables.  They will record their observations in their lab reports.   Discussion and vocabulary.  Students will do a vial shake test using the sand mixture and water.  Read Science story "Real People in the Grand Canyon" and discuss.  Students will finish the lab report and write the conclusion.

CW-create a river and vocabulary.    HW-  finish Erosion Lab report.

Day 8 Students will begin writing the lab report for the Deposition Lab. Students will create another river and discuss where the water flows and how the earth material is deposited.  Students will use food coloring to determine the water flow.  Discussion questions and vocabulary.  Students will finish Deposition Lab Report.

CW-water flow model and vocabulary    HW-finish Deposition Lab report.

Day 9 Students will begin writing the lab report for the Slope Lab.  Students will create a slope and examine 2 water sources, a standard water source and a flood source.  Discussion questions and vocabulary.  This Lab will take 2 days.  Students will also investigate floods and what damage they can cause.  Students will read 2 stories in the Landforms book, Rivers and Shapes of Earth. Students will answer questions and write facts about each story.

CW-create a slope and vocabulary     HW-finish Slope Lab report

Day 10  Student will write the lab report for building a mountain. Students will build a foam mountain and compare it to a real mountain.  They will write vocabulary in their science spirals and draw a picture of a topographic map.

CW-create a mountain and vocabulary   HW-finish Mountain Lab report

Day 11 Students will answer TAKS questions about Landforms and Earth Science.  Students will create a poster of the 4 major types of weathering and erosion.
