Boy, that case study really made me think. In my class I have several students that always raise their hand to answer a question or participate in a discussion. There are also other children that never or very rarely participate without being prompted. I remember telling a child that had been repeatedly raising their hand that day, "Thank you for raising your hand and wanting to participate but lets see what someone else might say". At the time I had thought out what I wanted to say and it sounded nice but when I read the study my heart sank. I thought - oh no I hope I didn't make that child feel the same way. Back to "sending the right messages" - my intent was not to push the child aside but to give others a chance. That child hasn't stopped participating so I know it didn't affect them to the extent of the child in the case study but it sure made me think about how to handle such a situation.
