I like what you said about not keeping students in the same group. Children are creatures of habit and they see the patterns that we set in our classroom. I think it also goes along with "sending the right message". We may not intend for the students to know whether or not they are in a particular group but they may still figure it out even if they are "nameless" groups. Over the years I have changed how I handle small groups in my class. Rather than trying to "group" the kids and keep them in that group I just work with them according to the skill they are working on. They may or may not be with the same people they were with the time before. It just depends on what the focus is and what they need assistance with.
