I think it is more important to teach the child to focus on improvement and growth....being a librarian and working with K-5 has given me a chance to compliment current 3rd graders on how far they have come in learning to read since they first came to school in Kindergarten...and, I try to target those who really struggle so they know they are improving. I also have a chance to focus on the GT who come in as high readers to begin with...and, have in the past borrowed books from middle school libraries to challenge them.
