In my day, it wasn't a capital letter and full stop group, it was the red birds, blue birds, and the buzzards...I didn't fall into the buzzards, but I was definitely not a red bird in second grade. I was a blue bird, and day after day, I had my feelings hurt because I knew that the better readers were red birds. I worked so hard to get there, and I never quite made it...I just think it is so important to remember that children "know" what group they fall into as students. It's our job to bring learning full circle so that we see needs and adjust when necessary. No child has to stay in one group or another. Children's needs change constantly. I agree with the author that finding the right balance for student expectations can be tricky. I think it something that I work on on a daily basis. Fine tuning expectations changes with the student and the moment. Being flexible, I think, helps where this is concerned. Children, from the lowest to the highest achieving, need to know that the expectations I have for each of them changes daily. However, my love for them and wanting what is best for them is constant.
