The CFB Great GEOrace Travel Bug Race 2007In June, 2006, the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD held its first middle school summer kids camp - The Amazing GEOrace - focusing on GIS/GPS technology and the sport of geocaching. Each of the six middle school campuses: Blalack, Bush, Field, Long, Perry, and Polk, nominated four students (two each, a boy and girl from 6th and 7th grade) to attend the three-day camp. As a culmination of the camp, each campus selected an item to be its Travel Bug, named it, and created a goal for it to accomplish. A Travel Bug (TB) is a special geocaching trade item. Geocaching is a world-wide family oriented scavenger hunt using hand-held GPS receivers (Global Positioning Systems) and the geocaching website. Visit this link to learn more about the sport: Geocaching A Travel Bug wears a special dog tag with a number used to identify it and is traveling from Geocache to Geocache on a very specific mission. The six TBs in The CFB Great GEOrace TB race each have four tasks to accomplish before returning to a cache close to their home campus. Geocachers will help the TBs travel around the country or world to fulfill these tasks as quickly as possible. June of 2007 is the target date for the end of this race, but the TBs will continue on until they return to CFB-ISD. The Polk GIS Club will be launching the TBs at the First Breakfast 2007 Geocaching Event on January 20th, then six members of the club have been designated as cartographers for each of the TBs and they will create maps to track their travels and accomplishments. These maps will be linked to this web site after the race begins.
