Newman Smith High School Syllabus 2006-2007
What does it mean to be an American? What does equality mean? Does living in a “free” society mean individuals are free from responsibility? The answers are not simple. The answers can be found in the history of this country. You will understand that many of today’s problems and issues have their seeds in the past. This class will bring you closer to some answers and will challenge you for some solutions.

Grading Policy
Your nine-week average is based on the following:
Homework, in class work, quizzes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .40%
Tests, projects . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . … . . ………….... . . . . . . . . . . 60%
Your semester average is computed by adding 80% of the average of your two nine-weeks grades to 20% of your final exam grade.
Be aware: there are no extra credit projects that will replace assignments that were done incorrectly the first time.
Make-up Work
If a student is absent for one day, one day will be given to make up the assignments missed. It is the student's responsibility to obtain his assignments before or after class on the first day the student returns to school. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED.
NOTE: Field trips and competitions are not absences. If you are not in class because of school business, your assignment is due on or before the due date. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. All assignments are due with the sound of the tardy bell. If a test/quiz is missed, an alternative test/quiz will be given.
Materials
Make sure you have a pen or pencil every day. You will also need a loose leaf folder to keep track of daily focuses, notes, daily assignments and tests (you will need dividers). If map pencils and markers are needed to complete an activity, it is your responsibility to have these supplies, I will not supply them (they should be with you or in your locker at all times). Points will be deducted from projects in class that are not colored when required.
Tutorials
I am available every day before school (except Fridays). If for some reason I will be unavailable, I will let you know ahead of time. Other times will have to be arranged. Tutorials will be held in the PLATO Lab SE 150. All re-teaches, re-tests and make-ups must be scheduled in advance. (I also have obligations in the PLATO Lab.)
