I. Course Goals
A. Students will prepare the Contest Marching Band, as well as the drum line
show, while demonstrating proper percussion techniques on their assigned
instrument.
B. Students will prepare timpani, snare drum, and mallet keyboard etudes in
preparation for region band auditions.
C. Students will develop technique, as well as music theory and sight reading
skills on a range of instruments through the private lesson enrichment program.
D. Selected students will prepare contemporary percussion ensemble literature to
submit a recording for PASIC’s 2008 “Call for Tapes” competition, to be held in
Austin, TX.
E. Students will relate percussion to other musical idioms, history, culture,
the other arts, and across academic disciplines.
II. Student Requirements
A. Students will arrive on time with the appropriate materials, such as a
band-issued binder with music, as well as sticks and mallets according to the
recommended equipment list, practice pad, pencil, and others as recommended.
B. Students are expected to participate in all class activities.
C. Students will learn all marching show music, drum line show music, region
band music, and UIL solo and ensemble music as assigned by the director.
D. Students will operate all equipment using guidelines set forth in class. If a
student misuses the equipment, he/she will be responsible for the cost of repair
or replacement of the equipment as determined by the directors.
E. Students will attend all scheduled after school rehearsals and performances
for marching band, drum line, or any other sectional or group practice scheduled
by the Smith band staff.

III. Grading
A. Formative Grades (40% of Grade)--Includes participation and level of
performance in rehearsals and class activities such as masterclasses, ensemble
playing, listening, or writing.
B. Summative Grades (60% of Grade)--Includes testing of region band music, show
music, and preparation of UIL solo and ensemble literature. Performances will be
arranged before, during, or after class
