AP English Literature & Composition

Vocabulary – Second Semester

Mrs. Mueggenborg, Turner High School

·        How does this work?

Every Friday, there will be a vocabulary quiz over 10 words.  Quizzes will be as follows: I will pronounce the words, and you will spell them, define them, and use each word in a sentence with contextual clues that help define it further.  Many of these words can function as several parts of speech; you may use any form of the word you like in the sentence, provided that you use it correctly.  For example: if the word is “beguile,” you may use “beguile” or “beguiled” or “beguiling” in your sentence.

·        How do I do this?

You may learn the words any way you want: you will need to find the way that works best for you.   I suggest using a dictionary to define the words, writing the definitions in this packet.  Then make flash cards, and carry them with you everywhere – and look at them frequently!!!  Get a study buddy and quiz each other.  Give yourself a quiz.

·        Where do these words come from?

These words come from a variety of places, including texts we may use in class, past AP tests, and SAT/ACT materials.

·        Why are we doing this?

Because it’s good for you!  Chances are, your vocabulary is not college-caliber, but this is a college-level class.  You need to expand your vocabulary, and be able to recognize and understand these words when they appear, and also use them in your speaking and writing.  Aside from the acquisition of vocabulary, you’ll develop and refine your study skills, which will be invaluable to you in college.
