Student Programs
Student Clubs
Bilingual Education:
The bilingual program seeks to develop student
skills in both Spanish and English. When students exit the bilingual
program it is our goal that they will be reading, writing, listening, and
speaking on level in both languages.
Content Mastery:
Content Mastery provides
instructional support to students with a variety of disabilities and who
receive their primary instruction in the general education setting.
This program also provides teachers support by assisting with
modifications, materials and information best to serve these students in
the classroom. Students receive instruction and participate in all
group work and classroom discussions in their regular classroom.
Students come to the center when they need help with completing
independent work, reading or reading subject matter or studying for a
test. The Content Mastery teacher also is available to help in
classrooms as needed by the students. The classroom teacher, Content Mastery teacher and family members
work together as a team to help the student achieve academic goals.
This collaborative effort is important in achieving student success.
English as a Second Language (ESL):
McLaughlin's English as a Second
Language program is a program that meets the needs of limited
English speakers and new-comers who speak languages other than English.
The program incorporates various ESL strategies that promote confidence in
oral language development, reading and writing skills. In addition,
emphasis is placed on student's appreciation and continued development of
their cultural heritage. Collaboration with supportive regular classroom
teachers has helped structure literature and content based lessons that
promote learning and acquisition of the English language.
Gifted & Talented Services:
McLaughlin Elementary School serves gifted
students through the ACE program (Academic Creative Education) from
mid-semester of kindergarten through fifth grade. Students can be referred
for assessment throughout the school year by teachers or parents. The
school counselor provides individual intelligence and achievement
assessment for each student referred. Other criteria used for screening
includes student performance, personal characteristics, and parent
inventories. Students who qualify for the program are cluster grouped for
at least 150 minutes weekly to receive differentiated instruction from
classroom teachers who receive ongoing training in gifted education
strategies. The school counselor provides groups for gifted students
to enhance their individual and group skills in communication, thinking
and problem solving, and creativity through the use of games, team
building activities, puppets, and drama. Gifted students are encouraged to
participate in Odyssey of the Mind, math competitions, and science fair.
Herman Reading:
The Herman Reading Program is a
multisensory/bihemispheric skill-level approach that coordinates phonetic
decoding and comprehension to meet the diverse needs of intellectually
capable, but severely reading disabled (dyslexic) students.
Support Center:
The Support Center is a small special education
class with students that have a variety of learning styles. These students
are included in regular education classes for academics or fine arts
instruction.
Technology:
McLaughlin's technology has been increased over the
past few years.
Along with each
classroom equipped with student computers with internet access and a
student printer, we also have many other great technology tools that have been installed in
various classrooms for all teachers and students to use.
The Beyond Hardware
Initiative is also bringing technology carts to several classrooms
throughout the school. This cart includes a digital projector,
document camera, VCR, computer, digital camera, and CPS student testing
system. Each of the students has a remote control to input answers
for tests. This gives the teacher immediate feedback about his/her
students' progress. For more information, view the BHI
webpage.
In addition, each teacher at McLaughlin will
has a teacher workstation that is connected to a DVD player, VCR and television. The
workstations, as well as the computer lab, will have internet
access.
McLaughlin also has a computer
lab. The Computer Lab
offers a variety of software for students to use including word
processing, educational programs and multimedia authoring
software. In the Lab, students work
on their keyboarding and word processing skills.
Student Clubs
Choir:
The McLaughlin Choir is made up of
students in the third, fourth, and fifth grades. There is no cost to be a
part of this group. They have performed for PTA programs, school
assemblies and a the Halliburton Energy Industries luncheon in November of
1997.
Math Teams:
The Math Team has a
longstanding tradition of math success at McLaughlin. The McLaughlin Math
Team always does well at events and there are numerous individual winners.
Safety Patrol:
The Safety Patrol is an organization whose purpose
is to protect the students, staff and property of McLaughlin Elementary by
patrolling the campus after school and enforcing the Rules for Safety we
have in place. The members of the Safety Patrol are fifth graders who
demonstrate excellent behavior, citizenship, and work habits. Safety
Patrollers are also aware of the importance of academic progress and must
pass all classes. The Safety Patrol leaves their classes at 3:00 in order
to be at their post by the time the bell releases children at 3:10. The
members help students and visitors safely cross the busy McLaughlin
parking lot. They also monitor the campus grounds to make sure kids are
observing the Rules for Safety; walking bikes, keeping off the grass, and
of course, never running! Safety Patrollers often escort our younger
fellow Tigers to the After School Program, or safely to their parents'
cars. They are responsible for so much! Since we ask so much from our
Safety Patrollers throughout the year, we also make sure we have time to
celebrate together!
It is hard work to keep the
entire campus as safe as possible, but our patrol does it well and we are
proud of them!
Student Council:
The McLaughlin Student
Council is comprised of students from fourth and fifth grade classes. The
objectives of the Student Council are to promote leadership development
and service to the school and community. The officers include a president,
vice-president, treasurer, and secretary elected by the students. Meetings
are held when necessary. Committees meet at different times and report to
the general meeting. Some of the activities and fundraisers we have done
include a penny drive to raise money for our school library, and helping
with many other various projects.
