The first few weeks of school are already under our belts! I have been so pleased with the work that the students and staff are doing. Your children (our children!) are so kind and eager to learn! You might have noticed a new approach to mathematics this year. The new math adoption focuses on problem solving with a strong emphasis on students being able to explain their thinking. Your child is being taught using a nationally tested curriculum which asks students to explore a variety of ways to solve a particular concept. In addition, it works on numeric fluency...being able to decompose (break apart) numbers and work with them in a variety of different ways. This process is not only new for students, but for staff members as well. We are working on asking questions that facilitate students making meaning of the content without directly "telling" them how to solve the question. This will help children internalize math concepts instead of just memorizing it. We know you may have questions as we transition through this process.
