Literary Elements:

 

Define the following terms:

 

Metaphor: A figure of speech that compares seemingly unlike things.  Example:  Juliet is the sun.

 

Simile: A figure of speech using like or as to compare seemingly unlike things.

Example:  "He was as strong as a horse."

 

Alliteration: The repetition of consonant sounds, most often at the beginnings of words and syllables.

 

Onomatopoeia:__The use or a word or phrase that actually imitates or suggests

the sound of what it describes. Example: Boom, bang, Ahh……….

 

 

Rhyme: The repetition of identical or similar sounds at the ends of words used close to

one another.

 

Characterization: The methods a writer uses to develop the personality of a character.

 

 

Tone: An author’s attitude toward a subject. The tone may be eerie, threatening, serious. or light-hearted.

 

Mood: The emotional quality or atmosphere of a story.  This comes from what the reader if feeling.

 

Personification:     A figure of speech in which a human quality is given to an animal, object, or idea.  Example:  The plants danced out of the ground

 

Point of view: The relationship of the narrator to the story.  Examples: 1st person ; 3rd person.

Foreshadowing:  The use of clues by the author to prepare readers for events that will happen in a narrative.

 

Repetition: The recurrence of sounds, words, phrases, lines or stanzas in a speech or piece of writing.

 

Assonance: Repetition of vowel sounds in a series of words.  Example:  “The little

 

kid hit the ball and it broke a window.

 

Consonance: Is the repetition sound within a series of words to produce a harmonious effect.  Example:  “A silly, yellow cat walked by the flowering lilies on the lawn

 

Stanza:     Is a division in a poem named for the number of lines it contains. 

 

 

End rhyme:   Rhyme occurs at the end of lines Example: “I’ll turn off the light As soon as I say good-night”

 

Hyperbole: is a deliberate, extravagant, and often outrageous exaggeration. Example: “The shot heard around the world.”

 

 

 

 

OxymoronA combination of contradictory words. A form of paradox that combines a pair of opposite terms into a single unusual expression.

Example:  “As cruel kindness"

 

Pun    The usually humor use of a word in such a way to suggest two or more of its meanings or the meaning of another word similar in sound

Describe the Middle Ages?  How was it different from the “Renaissance” ?  Were statues during the Middle Ages depicted different?

 

Middle ages had very stiff unnatural statues………..

Middle ages was a very dark time in our society.  People were unable to use their imaginations to create things.  NO leisure time.  Europeans had to work hard to just survive and thus forgot about the arts and teachings from ancient Greece and Rome.

 

Renaissance artists revived the arts and brought about art, music, theater, literature, and philosophy.  Many subjects were studied in depth such as math, science, law, and philosophy.  Major inventions also occurred during the renaissance period.

Why did Hitler accuse the Jewish people of the downfall of Europe?

Hitler used them as a scapegoat in order to try and justify why he killed so many.  Hitler used propaganda in order to lie  about the Jewish people.  Hitler blamed Jews for the problems with the German economy.

 

 

 

How were the Jews transported to concentration camps?  What were the conditions of their transport to the camp?

By boxcars.  The conditions were horrible.  People were stacked in the cars like cattle and many died from heat, lack of food and water, and disease.  The boxcars smelled of human waste and sweat………

 

 

 

 

What did Hannah’s mother what her to know about the Jewish holiday?  Why is it important to know?

 

Holidays are not about eating , but remembering what sacrifices people made during the “Holocaust”…..

People should always remember the hardships and sacrifices individuals made in order to survive in such a terrible time in our history.  We should appreciate all of the freedom that we have………
