About the Teacher & Study Links      (you are here)

Much of my childhood was spent on the road between Texas and New York, visiting relatives of my father's family in the southern states. I have many fond memories of time with my great-grandmother and grandmother, hearing stories of their childhoods in Texas, and learning to crochet, just as each of them had learned when she was young. The maternal side of the family was scattered from Manhattan to Pennsylvania, and we visited the city streets beneath the shadow of the Statue of Liberty, seeing a different side of life. When we weren't traveling somewhere else, we enjoyed the simplicity of living in a rural area of western New York.

That road led through the Appalachian mountains, and we often stopped for hikes in the shady woods out to amazing vistas; so perhaps it was inevitable that I chose a college somewhere in the middle, with its own amazing vistas. The University of the South, or Sewanee, as it is often known, is a unique community with rich resources for studying natural resources, which became my Bachelor's of Science. During and after college, I interned with the Department of Environmental Conservation in New York, and the National Zoo in Washington, DC. Then I embarked on an unexpected journey--I settled in my own little town, and adventure found me there. In 1996, I became a volunteer EMT with my local ambulance corps. In 1997 I started working for an outdoor adventure company, and stayed with them until 2005, when I moved to New Hampshire and worked for a private school, Stonehearth Open Learning Opportunities, teaching wilderness medicine to outdoor enthusiasts, camping staff, and college programs around the country. In 2007, I wanted to be near my grandmother again, so I moved here to Texas, and began the adventure of teaching at Creekview!
