Mary Grimes has
been recognized as an exemplary program. It has received the Governor's
Award of Excellence and served as one of eighteen mentor high schools in
Texas, the only alternative program chosen. In addition, the school helps
Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD achieve one of the lowest dropout rates in
the state. |
| Our program, originally
known as Valley View Learning Center, was started in 1976 with 100 students.
Although we have expanded, our mission remains the same. The staff at Mary
Grimes Education Center is dedicated to helping students set and reach
lifetime goals. |

Individualized, Accelerated Curriculums
Mary Grimes is quite different
from the traditional high school. The program focuses on individualized,
accelerated courses and flexible scheduling. Small classes and a small
student body enable teachers to collaborate on methods to improve student
achievement.

CLASSROOM
STRUCTURE
|
Classes at Mary
Grimes are not delineated by grade level. Students enroll with a teacher
who is responsible for multi-course instruction in a particular subject
area. Students receive course outlines when they enroll in a class. Each
course requires a minimum passing grade of 80% on all assignments.
Courses are designed to be completed
in six weeks, the equivalent of a traditional school semester. However,
since students work at their own pace, they may finish a course in less
than six weeks. For those students who need more time to learn concepts,
the process may take longer. |
| Student needs are met
through flexible scheduling. School hours vary according to student work
schedules. Students may attend school from 8:00 am to 3:15
pm .
