The High School Equivalency Program (HSEP) is also known as the “In – School GED Program.” The purpose of the program is to prepare eligible students to take the high school equivalency examination (GED).

Student Eligibility

Ø      The student is eligible if he or she has been court ordered to enroll in a preparatory class for the high school equivalency examination or take the high school equivalency exam under Section 7.111.

Ø      The student is eligible if all of the following conditions are met:

ü      the student is at least 16 years old at the beginning of the school year or semester;

ü      the student is a student at risk of dropping out of school, as defined by Section 29.081;

ü      the student and the student’s parent or guardian agree in writing to the student’s participation;

ü      at least two years have lapsed since the student first enrolled in ninth grade;

ü      the student has accumulated less than one third of the credits required to graduate under the minimum graduation requirements for the school or district;

ü      any other conditions as specified by the commissioner.

Program Structure

The student will remain enrolled in the district during program completion. The program can serve a maximum of thirty students at any given time. The day is split into two sessions, morning (8:00 – 11:15) and afternoon (12:00 – 3:15). Students may or may not be able to choose which session they attend, depending on enrollment numbers. Students are required to participate in an application process and make a commitment to attend 3 hours per day.  If a student does not meet the attendance requirements, they may be asked to return to their home school program to provide another student the opportunity to complete the program. This minimum attendance requirement is set by the state and cannot be altered by the HSEP staff. Curriculum is self paced, provided online through the Plato High School Equivalency Program. On site teaching support is provided by a certified teacher and a teaching assistant.
