Background

What is Texas? Texas is the second largest state in the nation next to Alaska. Texas is the second most populous state next to California. Texas is among the top five fastest growing states and has the fourth highest rate of immigration in the country. However, those facts alone do not paint all the important pictures of Texas. The pictures of Texas have taken thousands of years to develop. The pictures of Texas have many shades of colors, hues and tints of faces and places. Oh sure, the amount of land has helped; the oil and gas deposits have helped; the rich, black, loamy land has helped. True, the state’s plentiful natural resources have contributed much to the greatness of Texas.

It has taken 20,000 years of time and space for the spirits of the earliest Texans and modern man to converge. That place is Texas… now. The questions remain; do the people make Texas great or does Texas make people great? Some scholars attribute it to the blanketing land spreading from the piney woods in the east to the worn out mountains of the west, from the Llano Estacado in the north to the soft velvety coastal plains of South Texas. Or the harsh caliche dirt ranches of the Big Bend Country. Perhaps it is the great river: the Rio Grande on the northern side, the Rio Bravo del Norte en el otro lado. Or is it as effervescent, as invisible as a hummingbird gone from the window; or as simple as trying to salt salt.
