In the search box at the top right of the American History Museum page, search on "segregation."  Select "The Defenders of Segregation - Separate Is Not Equal." Then click on "Segregated America."  You'll find the derivation of the term "Jim Crow," and photos that will give you an understanding of the era. There's also information on the KKK, poll taxes, and "separate but equal."
