Westward Expansion


Write a series of journal entries describing a wagon train trip West.
Create a mural timeline of significant episodes in the opening of the West.


Survival

Discuss the character traits necessary for survival, and how Paulsen's characters exemplify those traits.  Which of these traits do you think you possess?
Make a list of tools needed for survival, justifying each choice.
Create a survival guide brochure using information from one of Paulsen's books.
Compare one of Paulsen's survival books to one by Jack London (Call of the Wild, White Fang).
Create a bibliography of survival stories, especially those that contain young adult protagonists.
Write an informative paper on "How to Build a Fire."  (or any other survival skill)
Research orienteering on the Internet.  Create an orienteering map of your school or neighborhood.


Historical Events

Research the causes and effects of the Mexican War.
Interview veterans to determine their perceptions of war.
Make a mural showing a journey on the Underground Railroad.



 
 


Environment/Nature

Research the American buffalo and the role they played in Native American life.
Examine species that are currently in danger of extinction, the reasons why, and the effect that might have on the environment.
Describe the various biomes you would encounter if you were traveling on a wagon train from Missouri to Oregon.
Describe the signs that often signify weather changes in Paulsen's books.
Create a diorama of a biome in one of Paulsen's books.
Track temperatures in Alaska and your hometown during the Iditarod, and create a graph to display the differences.
Contact an animal rights group to find out their stance on hunting/trapping.  Do you agree?  Why or why not?
Find out the hunting and fishing laws in your area.  Make a poster showing why these laws are necessary to the preservation of nature.
Choose one of the plants or animals mentioned in one of Paulsen's books.  Research it and create a Power Point or Hyperstudio presentation on it.
Compare and contrast city survival skills and wilderness survival skills.



 
 

Heroes

Read a biography of an adventurer and compare his or her life to one of the characters in Paulsen's books.
Research current events news sources and create a poster showing modern day examples of heroism, especially in adolescents.
What are the characteristics of a hero?  In what ways is Gary Paulsen himself a hero?
Write a ballad about a hero in one of Paulsen's books.


Cultures

Look up various sacred places around the world using Web sites, and design a brochure that tells about them.
Discuss how cultural values are reflected in Paulsen's work.
