Step 1 - PLAN
What is my task or question?
What information do I need?

Planning is the most important step in the research process.  If you don't plan, you won't know what you need, you will waste time, and your project may fail to meet the requirements of the assignment. So, let's plan!
Use the Topic Planner or use the Big 6-KWL Chart (KWL chart also covers Big6 steps 2 & 3).

  1. Open & print out the Topic Planner or the Big6-KWL Chart
  2. Create what, where, when, why, who, how questions. Pick 1 or 2 to focus your topic.
  3. Choose 4-5 keywords you can use to search in resources.

Step 2 - IDENTIFY Resources
What resources are required by my teacher?
What are the best resources for the information I need?

If you need:

Try these websites for more assistance:

How to Choose the Best Search for your Information Need - from NoodleTools

Step 3 - LOCATE Information
Where are the resources?
Where do I find the information in the resource?

  • Books are in the library--Ask Ms P for help.
Look in the Table of Contents for chapters about topic, or
look in the Index for the keywords
  • Online resources are all listed on the BroncoNET homepage under Library Links
To find information in the resource, use the Search box on the resource's homepage and
enter the keywords you created in Step 1.
  • To search for other websites, use NetTrekker or
Use Ms P's Best Search Tools to choose a Directory or Search Engine.
Enter keywords, Boolean or ± operators [Ask Ms P if you need help with this]

Step 4 - SELECT Information
What information fits the focus of my topic?
How do I avoid plagiarism?

Record bibliographic information FIRST in order to cite your resource: BroncoNET Citation Guide

To record information from your resource, use one of these methods:

  • Notetaking Template
  • Cornell Notetaking System
  • MS Word
  • 3 x 5 index cards to make note cards
  • PowerPoint® to make note cards on the computer
[Talk to Ms P if you need help learning how to do this.]

Avoid plagiarism: paraphrase or summarize information; use quotation marks to show exact words. Need help? => What is plagiarism?

Step 5 - CREATE Product
How will I organize my product?
How will my product show what I've learned?

Organize information into logical topics or sequential patterns:

  • Create an outline with MS Word [Ask Ms P how to convert MS Word notes] or
  • Move note cards around to create a hierarchy or
  • Drag & drop PowerPoint® slides.

Determine best format to present information (may be dictated by your teacher).
Use the information to write in your own words.
Add multimedia elements only to explain, illustrate, or highlight information or presentation

Step 6 - EVALUATE Results
How effective is my project?
How efficient was my process?

Effectiveness:  How did my product turn out?  Did I meet my original task?
Your teacher may have a rubric to use.

Efficiency:  How well did my process work?  Did I cite all my sources?
Use the new Big 6 Rubric to stay on task during your project.
Teachers: please read About Big 6 Rubric.
