    Selection of Materials

Selection of instructional materials for the schools shall be evaluated in accordance with the following criteria:

    A.   Needs of the individual school, based on knowledge of the curriculum and of the existing collection, shall be given first consideration.

         1.   Instructional materials are selected to provide for needs of the school community and the school program.

         2.   Professional journals, standard catalogs, and review digests as listed on the next page will be used to assist in previewing and selecting of materials.

    B.   Instructional materials shall be chosen on the basis of interest and the enlightenment of all students.

         1.   Materials shall be examined for the purpose of selecting those in which the presentation and subject matter are suitable for the grade(s) and interest level(s) at which they are to be used.  Materials will be considered in relation to both the curriculum and personal interests of students and teachers.

         2.   In accordance with community standards, special care shall be exercised in selecting materials to minimize the advocacy of a given political view, religious belief, or lifestyle.

         3.   A work, however, shall be neither included or excluded solely because of the race, nationality, political view, religious belief, or lifestyle of the author; neither will the work be included or excluded necessarily because of the race, nationality, political view, religious belief, or life style of any of the feature characters of the work whether fiction or nonfiction.

         4.   Instructional materials may be provided to present various points of view and perspectives concerning problems and issues on international, national, state, and local levels.
