Education Career Preparation Home Page
This course provides classroom instruction with supervised on-the-job training and work experience for students interested in business office occupations. This course will develop competency in many business skills and will emphasize good work habits and attitudes in order to prepare for employment and advancement in the business world. It is imperative that the student, the parents, the teacher and the supervisor of the job site work in close coordination to receive the best benefits possible for the student. It is very important that parents of Coop students understand that the student cannot miss school and then go to work. The student needs to be in class and at work every day possible. The student must be at school and at work on time each day. Tardies will certainly hurt the student in school and could get him/her fired from their job.
It is our job as Coop teachers to try to prepare the student to be a responsible, dependable, productive and reliable citizen for the future. This is why the student must be prepared to abide by the rules and regulations of the Coop programs and of Newman Smith High School, and the Students Code of Ethics.
Because of the recent economic trends, it is strongly recommended that each student entering the Business Ed. Coop program in the fall find a job during the summer. This is true for all students entering any Coop program. There will only be two weeks at the beginning of school to find a job. If the student does not find a job within the two weeks, the student must drop the program and pick up two other classes. This is why it is so important for students to look for a good job for themselves over the summer months. They will be provided with possible leads at the beginning of school, but there is no promise or guarantee that the students will get those jobs. Students from other programs and other high schools will also be competing for the same positions. Students without a job MUST attend Coop Study Hall every day during 7th period. They must do this until they have a job and it is verified.
There are specific rules and guidelines that must be followed in order for the student to be successful in this program. Only a few are listed below.
1. Dependable transportation is vital for each student. If the student does not have his/her own car, then back-up measures must be in place for the student to get to school and work on time every day.
2. Students must be a minimum of sixteen years of age.
3. Students must be either a junior or a senior.
4. Students must work a minimum of 15 hours per week, ten of which must be Monday - Friday.
5. Students cannot work for their parent.
