How to get an Instrument
Below are some options for getting an instrument for your child.

Rental
There are many good reasons to rent an instrument during your child's first year of playing.
1.  Instruments come in different sizes and most parents wait until their child graduates to a full size instrument before purchasing.
2.  You want to make sure that your child is committed to orchestra before you purchase.
3.  Financial reasons may prevent the immediate purchase of an instrument.  Many rental companies offer a rent to own option.

School Owned Instruments
At Dan F. Long Middle School, we have a limited number of cellos and basses for students to use in class.  Any students who wish to play the cello or bass are strongly encouraged to rent an instrument for use at home.  We also offer a few violins and violas for any students who are unable to meet  rental requirements.  If you feel that you may require assistance, please contact the directors.

Purchasing your own instrument
Before you buy, you want to make sure your child is committed to orchestra.  Your child should be ready for a full size instrument before you buy.  Contact the directors if you are unsure of your child's readiness for a full size instrument.
All reputable companies will allow you to try the instrument before you buy, so be sure to take the time to compare your options.
Please note that some instruments offered at pawn shops and online at unlicensed instrument retailers may seem like a great deal for the price you pay.  However,  you may spend more money to repair and maintain these instruments than they are worth!!!
If you already have an instrument to use, please contact the directors to consult about the instrument.
