3rd Grade Math
Here are the Units in our Math Investigations:
1st Unit of Study
Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System 1 (Trading Stickers, Combining Coins)
This unit will help student to develop ideas about the meaning of operations with whole numbers, the development of computational fluency, the structure of place value and the base–ten number system, and generalizations about number and operations. Students will explore the base-ten number system and understand the equivalence of one group and the units that comprise it and to develop computational fluency by adding and subtracting numbers accurately and efficiently.

2nd Unit of Study
Data Analysis (Surveys and Line Plots)
In this unit, students will develop ideas about collecting, representing, describing, and interpreting data. Students will develop skills discovering the need to classify data in order to make sense of it. Students will use data to compare groups, draw summarize data, and verbalize their conclusions of the data. Students will organize categorical data in different ways to answer different questions. They will analyze data by designing and carrying out a data investigation. This unit will include linear measurement where students will collect data through measuring length in inches and feet.

3rd Unit of Study
Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System 2
This unit is a part of the number and operations strand (unit 2 of 3). This unit will help students develop ideas about counting and quantity, the composition of numbers, and the operations of addition and subtraction. A focus is placed on counting and comparing larger quantities and on composing and decomposing numbers into several parts. Students will revisit familiar addition activities with variations that encourage counting on, and are introduced to the operation of subtraction. Students’ work focuses on developing an understanding of the operations and on developing strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems.

4th Unit of Study
2-D Geometry and Measurement (Perimeter, Angles, and Area)
This unit will help students to develop ideas about the attributes of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes, and help students understand how these attributes determine their classification. They also develop ideas about linear measurement (which includes perimeter), square measurement (area), the measurement of angles, and volume. Students will use standard units (metric and customary) for linear measurement. As a part of developing the features of shapes, students will be able to describe and measure angles.

5th Unit of Study
Multiplication and Division (Equal Groups)
In this unit, students will investigate the properties of multiplication and division, examine the inverse relationship between these two operations, and develop strategies for solving multiplication and division problems. Students will understand the meaning of multiplications, reason about numbers and their factors and multiples, understand and work with an array model of multiplication, develop computational fluency, and develop strategies for division based on the understanding of the inverse relationship between multiplication and division.

6th Unit of Study
Patterns, Functions, and Change (Stories, Tables, and Graphs)
This unit will help students develop ideas about patterns, sequences, and functions, which are a part of the early algebra foundation integrated into the Investigations units. Students will use tables and graphs to represent change; describe and represent a constant rate of change; construct, describe, and extend number sequences with constant increments generated by various contexts; and understand temperature and measuring with standard units.

7th Unit of Study
Fractions and Decimals (Finding Fair Shares)
This unit will help students to develop ideas about understanding, representing, and combining fractions and decimals. The mathematical emphasis of this unit is that students will understand the meaning of fractions and decimal fractions as equal parts of a whole; use representations to combine fractions. The crucial component of this unit is that students need to understand the meaning of fractions and their relationships, just as they need number sense with whole numbers. Before students learn to compute with fractions, they must do extensive work to understand what a fraction is by using a variety of contexts and models, both fractions as a part of a whole and fractions as a part of a set.

8th Unit of Study
Addition, Subtraction, and the Number System 3
This unit focuses on the operations of addition and subtraction. The students will develop ideas about the meaning of operations with whole numbers, the development of computational fluency, the structure of place value and the base-ten number system, and generalizations about numbers and operations. The students will develop computational fluency by adding and subtracting accurately and efficiently and describe, analyze, and compare strategies for adding and subtracting whole numbers.

9th Unit of Study
3-D Geometry and Measurement (Solids and Boxes)
This unit helps students to develop ideas about the attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes. Students come to understand how these attributes determine their classification. They also develop ideas about linear measurement (which includes perimeter), are, the measurement of angles, and volume. The mathematical emphasis will be to describe the features of a shape by using properties of 3-dimensional shapes; translate between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional shapes; and structure rectangular prisms and determine their volume.
