Fifth Grade

Photostory

As part of 5th grade Exhibition, a culminating unit that shows student growth in the IB PYP from Kindergarten through 5th grade, students were to use some sort of technology to show examples of what they had learned through their research and study.  One group studies the effects of land pollution and made a Photostory movie as part of their presentation.

In Spanish class, students made a Photostory movie called, Yo Soy (I Am).  They were to tell their name, the date, what grade and group they are in, etc.  Using technology this way really got the students excited about learning their Spanish!

Microsoft Word

In 5th grade, students are encouraged to practice their typing skills by doing some of their work in Microsoft Word.  Students had many opportunities to type papers, poems, lists and reflections.  Below are a few examples.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Also as part of 5th grade Exhibition, 5th graders were expected to create a PowerPoint to show their research and to educate others about their topic.  Here is an example from a group who studied about Water Pollution.

5th grade students also attended camp at Camp Grady Spruce for 1 week.  While there, students hiked, canoed, rode horses and did numerous other activities.  One of the requirements along the way was to write 10 poems about things they saw or did while at camp.  Teachers and parent chaperones took lots of photos throughout the week.  Upon their return, students learned how to create PowerPoints using these photos as the background images.  They chose photos that went along with their poems and placed the poems on top of the photos to create a great slide show.

Microsoft Publisher

Students have use Microsoft Publisher to make class newsletters, flyers for special events and pamphlets for projects.  Below are some examples.

Microsoft Excel

During a Math unit on data collection and graphing, 5th grade students learned to use Microsoft Excel for organizing their data and creating various graphs.  Part of these lessons was also to learn how to choose the correct type of graph for your data.

Other Technology

Many 5th grade students have been able to participate in the launching of "Gator TV", a television station at their school.  Students use sound and video equipment to air the daily announcements at the beginning of each day.  Students are responsible for updating the script each day using Microsoft PowerPoint and use a laptop computer to read this script as though it were a teleprompter.  Television station jobs include Sound Producer, Video Camera and Announcer.  This has been an extremely positive experience for the 5th graders involved in the production as well as for the entire school.  These students are very proud to be a member of the Gator TV crew.

Students are privileged to be able to use a Classroom Performance System from eInstruction.  Teachers use CPS to have students respond to questions asked verbally, on paper or on screen.  This enables them to instantly assess students comprehension of lessons.  As a result of using CPS from Kindergarten - Fifth grade, students are now able to create their own CPS lessons or assessments to go along with special presentations they are doing in class.
