Math Department
Mission
Statement:
The Math Department is committed to providing an excellent math program. The following expectations are set to encourage students to take full responsibility for their behavior and learning in order to reach their full potential.
Web page: My weekly tutorials schedule as well as all class assignments, calendars containing test dates, review sheets, homework tips, notes, and other important pieces of information are available on my teacher web page. Please go to http://cfbstaff.cfbisd.edu/jacobsj and click on the topics you are interested in reading more about.
Parent Connect: Ranchview has an Internet program designed for parents called Parent Connect. By visiting this site, you will have anytime access to your child’s grades, attendance, immunization records, etc. Visit http://cfbstaff.cfbisd.edu/ranchview for more information and directions on how to use the program. If you have already registered, log in at http://parentsran.cfbisd.edu
Tutorials: I am available for tutorials each week. If a student needs help outside of my regularly scheduled time they need to make an appointment to ensure I will be available. My schedule will be the same each week with occasional exceptions. It will be posted on my website as well as on the board inside my classroom. Morning tutorials are Thursdays from 7:00-7:20 am and Tuesday afternoons from 2:35-3:15 pm.
Unit Plans: A Unit Plan or Calendar will be posted on my website as well as in the classroom. The unit plan should be used to help students (and parents) keep track of assignments, prepare for events such as tests/quizzes/projects, and organize their time outside of school.
Grading: Students have the opportunity to keep track of their own grades. Averages are based on the following: Formative grades (homework, classwork, and quizzes) 40% Summative grades (tests and projects) 60% [Semester exams account for twenty percent of a student’s semester average]
Supplies: Each student must bring the following supplies with them to class every day: § pencil with eraser 9th grade binder w/5 tab dividers Planner (9th and 10th grade) § colored pen for grading TI-83 Plus Graphing Calculator* § loose-leaf notebook paper Textbook Discovering Geometry *Calculators: To ensure that all students are competent in the use of a graphing calculator, they will have the opportunity to check out a calculator through the library. (To check out calculator, each student must pay a $20 non-refundable rental fee, show their student ID, and return a signed parent permission letter).
Assignments: All work is expected to be neat, organized, legible, with all grading and/or corrections done with a colored pen. A proper heading is to be displayed in the top right-hand corner of each page. Homework will be given on a regular basis to increase the student’s understanding of the material. Homework, with all work shown, should be ready to be turned in at the beginning of the next class period. Answers turned in with no work shown will not be accepted. It is the student’s responsibility to make up any work missed due to an absence.
Tests/Projects: Re-takes for a test are only given under special circumstances. If the student is absent the day of a test they will be expected to take it the day they return. Projects are accepted a maximum of 3 days late with a penalty of 10 points each day. Cheating: Cheating will NOT be tolerated! Taking another student’s work and claiming it as your own, with or without the student’s permission, is considered cheating, and will result in a grade of zero for all parties involved. Group work does not mean you should copy your partner’s paper. Talking and roaming eyes during tests are also considered cheating. All students are expected to be honest.
Tips for Success:· Visit my web page often to keep up with what is happening in class. cfbstaff.cfbisd.edu/jacobsj · Attend tutorials as soon as you are having difficulties. · “Keep asking until you understand” · “Accept the consequences of your behaviors; both good and bad.”
It is important to me that your child is successful; therefore, I am willing to work with students on an individual basis to ensure that together we accomplish this goal of success.
