Ceramics Syllabus

During this course we will study the following:

• The vocabulary and language of ceramics.
• The elements and principles of design.
• Art history, criticism, aesthetics of art as they apply to ceramics.
• Use of media and techniques to decorate ceramic pieces.
• Historical aspects of ceramic art

Requirements:

• Ceramic Art Notebook—You will keep a notebook containing all sketches, handouts, and notes taken on reading assignments, lectures or demonstrations.
• Participation—Be prepared and present for class, take part in discussions, make efficient use of your time in class.  
• Competence—You should demonstrate competence by completing all sketches, hand outs and major assignments.
• Responsibility—You will be expected to show respect and concern to all aspects of the studio including the teacher, others students, tools, supplies and the room.
• Materials-You will need the following materials: 3 RING BINDER & SET OF 5 DIVIDERS

 Grading:

Formative Grades are 40% of your final grade and include:

·        Class work, homework, notes, preliminary work, independent sketches, quizzes, and notebook checks (notebooks should be kept in order).

·        Wheel thrown practice assignments.

·        Project construction & decorative technique grades.

Summative grades are 60% of your final grade and include:

·        Projects and major assignments.

Extra Credit:

·        Attend Museum Exhibits & Gallery Shows w/written paper

·        Participation in Shows & Competitions

****Incomplete assignments are not acceptable and will receive a “0”.

Supply Fee:  Due to the expense of quality art materials and their limited availability in this area, all students need to pay a $35 supply fee for the entire year. See the supply fee form.

Know your student handbook guidelines in reference to make-up/ late work policies.
