Ceramics Midterm Review
1. Grog - sand added to clay to make it stronger for building.
2. Scoring - mending two pieces of clay together (wet or leather hard) by crosshatching both pieces and moistening them with slurry to create a Velcro like adhesion that is permanent.
3. Plasticity -workability of clay.
4. Incising - tool with a metal pointed tip used for cutting and incising clay.
5. Banding Wheel - a lazy-Susan used for easily glazing –especially horizontal bands of color.
6. Stamping - a decorative technique created by pressing a stamp, shape, or texture into wet/leather hard clay.
7. Incising - decorative technique created by drawing into the surface of wet/leather hard clay with a pointed tool.
8. Sgrafitto - a decorative process where a design is scraped through one surface to another. This is usually done in the leather hard stage for engobe and can be done with any glaze on bisque ware.
9. Firing - process of using the heat of a kiln to convert clay from green ware to bisque or to melt glaze to the surface of the form.
10. Kiln Hood - vent over a kiln that removes heat and fumes presented by a firing.
11. Clay -natural substance found in the earth that is processed and refined. It can be fired hot enough that it can maintain its shape and be semi-permanent.
12. Pinching -a hand building technique that involves the artist moving and shaping clay with their fingers.
13. Greenware -a clay body that is dry but not fired. Also known as bone dry.
14. Wedging -getting air out of the clay and helping clay particles to align.
15. Extruder - a tool used to make coils of clay in different sizes and shapes.
16. Bisque -a state of clay after the first firing of green ware. At this state, clay may not return to the previous state.
17. Glaze -a decorative liquid glass applied to a clay surface.
18. Wire Tool - tool with two handles and a flexible wire use for cutting through clay evenly.
19. Slurry - a thick slip used to attach pieces of clay together.
20. Leather hard - the state of clay when it is stable and self supportive, but still workable.
21. Slab Roller - tool used to make even, flat pieces of clay.
22. Coiling - building technique that uses rope-like pieces of clay.
23. Kiln - oven used for baking clay (or glaze) to a temperature that it is hard and permanent.

25. Lekythos -an oil flask used mostly in funeral rite.
26. Krater - a bowl use for mixing water and wine.
27. Oenchoe- a wine jug with a pinched lip for pouring.
28. Kylix - a Greek drinking cup.
29. Amphora- a Greek shape used for storing things like wine, honey and corn.
