Library Hours/Flexible Scheduling
The Furneaux Library operates on a flexible library schedule. Students are invited to come to the library to check out new books, to study, to complete their homework, to read quietly, or to use the computers for searching, word processing, or to complete a power point presentation. Students are encouraged to come to the library as often as they need to. Some students may need to come to the library daily, weekly, or several times in a single day. Students in kindergarten and first grade may check out one book each library visit. Students in second grade through fifth grade may check out two books each library visit. Students working on special projects for classroom assignments may check out additional books as needed.

Library Research - The Big Six
Research completed in cooperation with the library follows the Big Six Problem Solving Model selected by the Carrollton-Farmers Branch I.S.D for students in K-12 developed by Michael Eisenberg and Robert Berkowitz. This model used in Kindergarten through fifth grade follows six steps guiding students through the research process to a completed product along with a self-evaluation of their final product. Below you will find the six steps of the Big Six Problem Solving Model and a link to the Big Six web site.

Research Form to Complete Big Six Steps Online and Print - BIG SIX or Big Six

The Big Six
Step 1 What needs to be done?
a) What does my teacher want me to do?
b) What questions do I need to ask and answer in order to do this?
Step 2 What resources can I use? Which ones are the best for me to use for this project?
Step 3 Where can I find these resources?
Step 4 What can I use from these resources?
How will I record the information I find?
How will I give credit to my sources?
Step 5 What can I make to finish the job (my product)?
Step 6 How will I know I did my job well?

Texas Bluebonnet Reading Program
Texas students in grades 3 through 5 have an opportunity to participate in the Texas Bluebonnet Reading Program. The Furneaux Library participates in that program. It is a reading program that allows students to select their favorite book from a preselected list of books chosen by educators as the top books of the past two years for all readers in grades 3-5. Students are encouraged to read or listen to as many of the titles as possible. The list is not designed for all students to read all of the books. Eligibility to vote is achieved by reading or listening to a minimum of five books on the list. Voting takes place in January at our Furneaux Bluebonnet Voting Party. Furneaux ballots will be sent to the State Library Association and tallied with other student ballots in Texas. The winning book and its author win an award and dinner in honor of their achievement. If your third to fifth grade child has not read any of these exciting titles, please encourage them to stop by the library to select one.
