Helping Your Child With Comprehension
(Having a conversation about books)

What was your favorite part?

Where did this story happen?

Who was this story about?

What was happening in this story?

Does that remind you of anything?

 Helping Your Child With Fluency
(Making reading sound like talking)

Reread the story with your child.

Read to your child to model how reading sounds.

Alternate reading pages with your child.

Record your child reading.

What to do when young readers make a mistake: What to do when young readers get stuck:
If the mistake makes good sense, don't worry about it.

If the mistake doesn't make good sense, wait to see if the reader will fix it.

Say, "Try that again."

Say, "Did that make sense?"

Say, "Did what you read look right and sound right?"

Wait and see if they work it out.

Say, "Try that again."

Say, "Look at the picture."

Say, "Think what would make sense.

Say :Read the sentence again and start the tricky word."

Tell the word.
