ATSSB
2004 Outstanding Performance Series
Look at bottom of the page for the  last UPDATE! ! !

The 2003-04 school year marked the second year that the BBMS Band program has participated in the ATSSB events (follow this link for information about ATSSB).  We had more students selected to the ATSSB Region 5/24 All-Region Middle School Band than the previous year.

This year, members of the Symphonic Band discussed the Outstanding Performance Series (OPS) competition.  As part of the education process, we spent class time discussing how the competition worked and how we could participate in the competition.  We discussed what music we could submit, what competitions we needed to attend and what the individuals needed to do for this to be an obtainable goal.

The members of the Symphonic Band decided to participate in the OPS competition and hoped to have one selection make it out of the Region level to the Area level.  The students settled in on three selections (one march and two concert numbers) and decided to attend the Region 24 UIL C/SR and the Springfest Contest held in the Murchison Hall on the University of North Texas campus.  We established a schedule for sectionals and full band rehearsals and the students began practicing on the music.

After our performance at the Springfest Contest, the band decided that we would submit all three of our selections for the competition.  After completing the paperwork and submitting the tape, we waited for the Regional competition.

Results of the Region Level OPS Competition
We're very excited to announce that all three of our selections will be submitted to the Area competition.  Our selections were:  Monterey March by K. L. King;  Dolce and Dance by Gary Fagan and Legend of Knife River by Elliott Del Borgo.

The Area competition will be held on June 16th.  Make sure you check back here for news about the next level of competition.

The BBMS Administration as well as the CFB Administration is very proud of the accomplishments of the BBMS Symphonic Band members.  In his Fine Arts presentation to the Board, Mr. McDaniel announced that the BBMS Band had three selections chosen to move on to the Area level.

Results of the Area Level OPS Competition

Well, the Area competition was held on Wednesday, June 16th at Bullard High School, just south of Tyler.  I'm excited to announce that we did well at the Area level.

Monterey March was the march that we submitted for the competition.  It placed 2nd at the Area level and will advance to the State Level OPS competition.  It will be one of ten marches the judges will hear at the State Level OPS competition.

Legend of Knife River was one of the two concert selections that we submitted.  It placed first among all of the concert selections.  It received 1st place votes from all five of the judges.  It will advance to the State Level OPS competition.  It will be one of fifteen concert selections the judges will hear at the State Level OPS competition.

Dolce and Dance was in a three way tie for 2nd place.  After the tie breaker, it placed second and will advance to the State Level OPS competition.  It will be one of fifteen concert selections the judges will hear at the State Level OPS competition.

The State Level OPS competition will be held at the Texas Bandmasters Association State Convention, July 23-26.  When I return, I will post the results of the competition.  At the State Level, there could be ten marches and fifteen concert selections competing.  The first and second place March and the first, second and third place concert selection will be recognized by the State.

The Symphonic Band did a great job and meet our goal of having one number make it to the Area Level, everything else is just extra.  Follow this link to see all of the pictures from the Springfest Band Contest.

Results of the State Level OPS Competition

The State Level OPS competition was held Saturday, July 24th in San Antonio at the Texas Bandmasters Association State Convention.  It was a very exciting contest and everyone there was very pleased with the results.

Mrs. Opitz, Mr. Studer, Mr. Williams (the new Assistant Band Director at Ranchview HS), Mr. Henning, my wife and I were present for the entire CC competition.  We were all very excited about the outcome of the competition.  Follow this
link and see the results from all of the groups that were competing this year.  When that page loads, look for the CC Bands and you will find our results.

Monterey March was ranked fifth in the State in the CC March Music category at the State competition.

Legend of Knife River was ranked fifth in the State in the CC Concert Music category at the State competition.

Dolce and Dance was ranked seventh in the State in the CC Concert Music category at the State competition.

These are excellent results for our first time to enter the OPS competition.  The 2003-04 BBMS Symphonic Band did a great job and has set a very high standard for future bands to meet and beat.

The members of the Symphonic Band should be proud of their accomplishment at the State level.  If you look at the complete list, you will notice that very few schools had all three of their selections make it to the State OPS competition.
